The Torre Belvedere‚ or ＂al Castel＂ as the people of Bergell call it‚ stands at the top of the rocky outcrop in the Maloja Glacier Top Reserve in Switzerland‚ where the terrain descends 350 metres from the Upper Engadine into the Val Bregaglia․ The Torre Belvedere was built as part of the private residence Castle Belvedere by Earl Camille Frédéric Maximilian de Renesse from Belgium from 1882 onwards․ However‚ the earl's dream of an Alpine residence for the European aristocracy in Maloja did not come true․ He ran out of money soon after construction began and the castle was only half-completed after his death‚ so the count never lived in the residence․ After the castle was used as a hotel and later as an educational institute‚ only the tower remained standing after a fire‚ and the extension had to be largely demolished․ The stables next door are only preserved as ruins today․
